Retro Recommendation: Kyuss - Blues For The Red Sun

Every Friday I turn the blog over to Dan Marsicano for his Retro Recommendation, giving you a chance to learn about underrated and overlooked gems from metal's past. This week, Kyuss is in the spotlight.The moment Kyuss announced that they were reuniting in 2010, the sparks of joy from the metal community could have ignited a forest fire. Slight disappointment set in when it was determined that guitarist Josh Homme would not be involved. However, that did little to extinguish the anticipation of Kyuss touring again with three-fourths of the original line-up. The reason Kyuss getting back together is such a big deal is just how important their music was on the development of stoner rock/metal in the early '90s.
No album from the band signifies this movement better than sophomore album Blues For The Red Sun. It has been debated that this was the first true stoner rock/metal album, a hazy trip into the inner smoke-filled minds of four unconventional musicians. With an eccentric mix of instrumental jams and direct, hit-worthy ventures, the band never fails to immerse the listener into a landscape of endless sand and unbearable heat waves.
"Green Machine" was the band's biggest single to date, with a memorable bass solo and riffs drowning in distortion. It's also one of the few songs with structural design holding it together. "Allen's Wrench" and "Thong Song" also have this formula, moving forward with an upbeat direction and a lack of out-there songwriting. The chemistry between Homme and bassist Nick Oliveri is apparent, a partnership that would transfer over to Queens Of The Stone Age, Mondo Generator, and the Desert Sessions.
The collection of longer songs are an opportunity for Kyuss to get into full jam mode. "50 Million Year Trip (Downside Up)" feels like a night drive down a cracked highway in the desert, with its rhythmic bumps. Homme shreds the hell out of his guitar on the lengthy "Freedom Run," while various interludes range from downtrodden acoustic folly to a noisy clash. Even with the multitude of them, none come off as unnecessary or a detriment to the album's flow.
Blues For The Red Sun would be the last album with Oliveri in the band. Two equally-classic albums followed from Kyuss before they dissolved in 1996. Blues For The Red Sun has the fuzzy production, cutthroat riffs, and soaring melodic vocals mimicked by dozens of others in the years to follow. Who knows what else this lineup could have done if it stuck around for a while longer. For being known as one of the influential albums in the stoner rock/metal genre, Blues For The Red Sun gets the nod for this week's Retro Recommendation.

Exodus Guitarist To Fill In For Slayer's Hanneman

Gary Holt of Exodus will be temporarily filling in for guitarist Jeff Hanneman during Slayer's upcoming tour dates. He will immediately join Slayer members Kerry King, Tom Araya and Dave Lombardo on their five-date Australian Soundwave Festival that begins February 26.
Holt comments about his upcoming stint as Slayer's touring guitarist: "How can I put into words how excited I am to have been asked to play with Slayer? Hard to describe for sure. Legendary band, check. Old friends since the birth of thrash metal. Check. Get to play 'Angel Of Death' live, priceless! I'll do my best to live up to the standard they've set for so many years, while we all wish Jeff a speedy return to health and his rightful place in Slayer."
Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman is currently recuperating at home after emergency surgery on his right arm after contracting a serious infection, possibly caused by a spider bite. He is expected to make a full recovery and will return to the Slayer line-up as soon as he has fully recovered.

Korpiklaani Interview

Korpiklaani are a very prolific band. 2010 was the first year without a new full-length from the Finnish folksters since 2004. Their latest CD Ukon Wacka is another dose of rousing, up-tempo folk metal with tales of ancient Nordic myths and of course a drinking song or two. Frontman Jonne Jarvela fills us in on Korpiklaani's new album, their recent experience on the 70,000 tons of metal cruise, making inroads in the U.S. and other subjects.Chad Bowar: Was your songwriting/recording process any different than usual for Ukon Wacka?
Jonne Jarvela: We have better songs, which is most important thing. Then there is better producing, because the last album Karkelo was the first album for producer Aksu Hanttu. It was more like getting used to each other and working together. Now this time we got to the real work right away. We also used a different producer for the folk instruments. Tero Hyväluoma took care of folk instrument arrangements and it wasn't only me who was saying what to do at the studio.

Band ini mulai berdiri pada tahun 1999 dengan formasi Herman Li (Gitaris), Sam Totman (Gitaris), ZP Theart (vokalis), Didier Almouzni (drummer), pada saat itu belum ada pemain Bass.
Pada tahun 2000, mereka mulai mengeluarkan album demo mereka dengan tajuk “Valley of The Damned” dengan 5 track demo lagu.
Juni,2000, demo mereka mulai di rilis di sebuah situs mp3.com, dan mereka memuncaki tangga2 lagu power metal, pada saat itu, Bassist Diccon Harper yang merupakan alumni grup band selandia baru beraliran black metal, demoniac, menyusul mantan teman2 nya yg berasal dari grup yg sama Herman Li dan Sam Totman, untuk bergabung dengan DragonHeart.
Di tahun 2001, mereka banyak menulis lagu untuk debut album mereka, dan melakukan banyak pertunjukan. di tahun 2001, sang keyboardis, vadim pruzhanov bergabung dengan DragonHeart, dan mulai ikut di berbagai pertunjukan mereka.
Setelah terikat kontrak dengan Noise records pada tahun 2002, mereka mulai sibuk untuk melakukan rekaman versi final album debut mereka “Valley of The Damned”.
Pada tahun 2002, bassist Diccon Harper mulai merasa bahwa DragoHeart tidak sealiran dengan aliran musiknya, dia keluar dari grup band tersebut, kemudian posisinya digantikan oleh Adrian Lambert.
setelah melewati beberapa tour, 2003, Didier Almouzni, pemain drum grup ini, juga ikutan mundur dengan alasan yang sama di utarakan oleh Diccon Harper.
mengisi kekosongan Didier, dave mackintosh, drummer band aliran symphonic Black metal “Bal-Sagoth”.
Kemudian, di tahun 2003 album debut pertama mereka keluar dengan nama yang sama dengan album mereka sebelumnya “Valley of The Damned”. yang sekaligus merubah nama grup band menjadi DragonForce dari nama sebelumnya DragonHeart, yang ternyata nama DragonHeart telah dipakai grup beraliran power metal juga, asal brazil, yang berdiri sebelum mereka, yaitu pada tahun 1997.
Album kedua mereka (Dragon Force), Sonic Firestorms mulai direkam pada bulan Oktober sampai dengan desember tahun 2003.
dan pada tahun 2006 mereka merilis album ketiganya, In human Rampage.

vokalis DragonForce, lahir pada tahun 1975 di clainwilliam, afrika selatan
theart bergabung dengan DragonForce, setelah teman satu grupnya, yaitu herman li dan sam totman melihat theart pada iklan Theart di majalah “metal hammer”,
kata li, theart adalah orang yang selama ini mereka cari untuk menjadi vokalis di grup band ini.
theart, juga bisa bermain gitar akustik. selain itu dia juga bernyanyi untuk grup beraliran punk metal dan comedy rock “shadow warriors”, yang merupakan proyek sampingan dari sam thotman.
Herman Li (1999-sekarang)
Lead dan rhytm gitaris, serta backing vokal ini lahir di Hongkong tahun 1976. awal dia bermain gitar pada tahun 1992 pada usia 16 tahun. setelah lama bermain di beberapa grup metal underground di London, dia memutuskan untuk membentuk grup sendiri dengan aliran power metal yg dinamai “DragonHeart” yg berganti nama menjadi”DragonForce”. Herman memiliki gaya bergitar yg sangat cepat, dia mengaku terinspirasi oleh musik video games dan beberapa musik games dari permainan komputer, hal ini tercermin pada permainan gitarnya di lagu “through the fire and flames” di album “in Human Rampage”, dia bilang sempat memasukkan effect suara permainan pacman di permainan gitar pada lagu itu.
Li di nobatkan sebagai best shredder pada acara Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards pada tahun 2005, melalui album sonic firestorms.
Li dan temannya satu grup, sam totman berhasil memenangkan 4 kategori di Guitar World’s Readers Poll 2007, sebagai Best new talent, best metal, best riff, dan best shredder. mereka juga memenangkan best guitar solo, melalui lagu Through the fire and flames pada Total Guitar’s readers poll tahun 2007.
Sam Totman (1999-sekarang)
Lead dan rhytm gitaris DragonForce, lahir di Inggris,dan menghabiskan masa kanak2 nya di selandia baru, dia mulai bermain gitar pada usia 9 th, dengan gitar klasik. sebelum ia bergabung dgn dragonforce, dia bermain dengan 3 band yg satu sama lain berbeda aliran. salah satunya demoniac. pada saat di demoniac nama panggungnya adalah “Heimdall”. demoniac mengeluarkan 3 album, sebelum bubar, mereka pindah dari selandia baru ke london dan bubar pada akhir 1999. Totman menulis beberapa lagu untuk dragonforce, ia juga masih aktif sebagai anggota band (additional player) “Power Quest” yaitu band power metal di inggris yg berdiri tahun 2001. yang nota bene pendirinya adalah steve williams (mantan pemain keyboard dragonHeart). Totman adalah alcoholic, kadang di penampilan live-nya tak jarang dia bermain gitar dalam keadaan mabuk, dia sering di kritik penggemarnya akibat kebiasaan buruknya ini, bukan apa-apa, cuma akibatnya permainan gitar nya menjadi aneh dan buruk. Totman sering menggunakan gitar Ibanez dalam setiap aksi panggungnya, seperti gitar seri V Blade, VBT700, dan IC400.
Vadim Pruzhanov (2001-sekarang)
pemain keyboard dan keytar dragon force, berusia 23 tahun, lahir di ukraina, lalu pindah ke london, Inggris. dia mulai bermain piano pada usia 8 tahun, lalu memperdalam ilmunya di sekolah piano. 3 tahun menuntut ilmu di sekolah piano, vadim nampak bosan dan akhirnya dia memutuskan untuk belajar piano sendiri. dalam proses pembelajarannya, dia mulai mengenal rock , dan tertarik untuk berkarir di aliran musik ini.
vadim juga bisa bermain gitar, dia terinspirasi beberapa pemain gitar terkenal seperti Yngwie Malmsteen, Strapping Young Lad, Steve Vai, Pantera, Judas Priest, Symphony X, dan Dream Theater.
Dave Mackintosh (2003-sekarang)
Dave “Compact Dynamo” Mackintosh, begitu nama dan julukan drummer dan back vokal Dragon Force, terkenal dengan permainan pedalnya yang sangat cepat, sebelumnya, Dave adalah anggota band “Bal-Sagoth”, band beraliran symphonic black metal berasal dari Inggris ini berdiri pada tahun 1993 – sekarang, Dave menjadi anggota “Bal-Sagoth” pada album The power cosmic (1999) dan Atlantic ascedant (2001).
Permainan Dave dipengaruhi oleh para drummer2 seperti : Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, Tommy Aldridge, Charlie Benante, Ingo Schwichtenberg, Nicko McBrain, Jonny Maudling, Vinnie Paul.
Frédéric Leclercq (2005-sekarang)
pemain Bass Dragon Force, multi talented alias mempunyai bakat yang beragam ini tidak hanya bisa memainkan gitar bass, tapi bisa bermain keyboard dan gitar, selain itu dia juga seorang session musician atau disebut dengan penyanyi sewaan yang bisa bernyanyi di band lain, sebagai partner duet dalam bernyanyi.Fred, adalah mantan anggota grup band beraliran power metal dari perancis ” Heavenly”.
Fred besar di keluarga musisi, pertama dia mengenal musik melalui piano, yang kemudian menuntunnya ke dunia heavy metal pada usia 12 th, dia berpindah dari bermain piano lalu bermain gitar. Setelah sukses bermain di beberapa grup metal underground di tempat tinggalnya, perancis, dia lalu bergabung dengan ” Heavenly”, bersama “Heavenly” dia berhasil menghasilkan album Sign of the winner (2001) dan Dust to dust (2004).dan melakukan tour keliling eropa.
2004, fred bersama-sama dengan pemain bass dan drum “Heavenly”, dia membentuk grup beraliran heavy thrash metal “Maladaptive”, yg menghasilkan sebuah demo (SUXEED), serta pernah melakukan tour di perancis, selain itu Maladaptive menjadi grup band pembuka konser2 besar seperti anthrax.
fred, bergabung dengan Dragon Force pada tahun 2006. setelah pemain bass sebelumnya, adrian lambert memutuskan untuk pergi dari dragon force. fred mengisi kekosongan lambert pada show dragon force di jepang dan amerika utara.
